Château Cos d’Estournel
Château Cos d’Estournel is a revered, first rate winery in St- Estéphe though it was classified a Second Growth in 1855. The château itself is one of the most recognizable in all of Bordeaux, as it sits atop a ridge, resembles an opulent Asian pagoda and neighbors with Lafite Rothschild. In old Gascon, Cos translates to ‘the hill of stones’ which describes its gravely, limestone, well drained terroir. Though it is predominantly Merlot based, atypical for wines of Médoc, the wines are full-bodied, tannic, deeply complex and ageable.
Tasting Notes
- WA95
- This 1982 is still displaying a beautiful deep ruby/purple hue as well as a stunning set of aromatics consisting of blue and black fruits, loamy earth, flowers, licorice, and spice box. The wine is medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a silky finish.
- WS95
- Built for aging. Very dark ruby in color, with a garnet rim. Dried flower and berry aromas. Full-bodied and very solid, with masses of fruit and tannins. Still has plenty of time to go.
