Roumier’s 2009 Bonnes-Mares is without question one of the wines of the vintage. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins provide the backdrop for the highly nuanced, expressive aromas and flavors that emerge from the glass. All the elements are in the right place in this extraordinary, moving wine. At times the Bonnes-Mares comes across as very powerful, at other times it is quite sensual. In other words, it is pure magic in the glass. Burgundy fans will flock to the Musigny because of its rarity but there is a very real possibility that the Bonnes-Mares will outshine it over time. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. 98+
Complex, fragrant aromas of sandalwood, jasmine and black cherry, with flavors to match, converge in this tightly grained, muscular red. Detailed and pure, showing balance and energy. The lingering finish promises the full potential, leading to a long sweet fruit and mineral aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2036.
"We don’t make Pinot Noir; we make wines from terroir which expresses itself through Pinot Noir."
- Christophe Roumier
Seductive, sophisticated, synchronized and sought-after. These are the words that come up over and over, critic to critic, enthusiast to enthusiast, in the discussion of Domaine Georges Roumier. It is celebrated as one of the premier estates of Cote d’Or, producing wines from Chambolle Musigny, “Les Amoureuses”, Bonnes Mares, Clos Vougeot, Musigny and Morey St. Denis. The juice is sensual and even in the most difficult of vintages, always over-delivers, which speaks to the fruit and to the fine winemaking led by Christophe Roumier. Stylistically, the wines are truly vehicles for the terroir to the palate. They are bright, concentrated, and elegant with just enough fruit.
"At this point, one could easily submit that this Domaine is one of the dozen strongest estates in Burgundy today. It just doesn't seem to miss, as is evident by the superb 1982's and 1986's, light vintages where even some of the most renowned properties stubbed a toe. Roumier, instead issued some of its prettiest wines from those vintages, especially in '86."
