Tasting Notes

JS100

A phenomenal Saffredi with so much structure and length. It’s full-bodied yet remaines agile and lively. Aromas and flavors of currants, mint and wet earth. Full-bodied, chewy and powerful. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. This has a special label celebrating the 25th anniversary of the production of this wine. It's the greatest Saffredi ever, cementing its reputation as the Lafite of Tuscany. This needs at least five years in bottle but it’s entrancing to drink now. A must-buy for Super Tuscan lovers.

The excellent 2012 Saffredi is one of the best wines I have tasted from Fattoria le Pupille. This is an exuberant and expressive blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller part Petit Verdot from the gorgeous hills of Maremma near Grosseto, Tuscany. The wine is rich and penetrating with a stunning sense of balance and inner poise. Dark cherry, blackberry, spice, leather, tobacco and grilled herb flow freely from the bouquet. The wine is softly textured with full body appeal. This fabulous Saffredi should age forward ten years or more. The Cabernet component of the wine shows perfect ripeness.

The Winery

Fattoria le Pupille

I have inherited my love for wine from my grandfather, but then a passion grows through its own channels. I wanted to make great wines and I wanted to do it here, in this beloved land.
– Elisabetta Geppeti, Owner

The collection of Tuscany’s Le Pupille was born in early 2000 in an antique farmhouse surrounded by land made to perfectly support old Sangiovese grapes. As a winery that began as a small family estate, Le Pupille, which translates to “the pupils,” has become a center for modern entrepreneurial and viticultural knowledge in the region. The winery is best known for its Saffredi, an IGT blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, which is also thought of as the Lafite of Tuscany. Le Pupille also makes three Sangiovese-dominant Morellino di Scansano blends as well as Pelfino, their blend of Sangiovese and Syrah, a rosato, and a botrytized white wine.
