Although the de Montille family roots can be traced back to the middle of the 17th century to the Auxois region of the Côte-d'Or in France, it was not until 1947 that the Domaine de Montille vinified its first vintage of wine. Before purchasing the physical estate the family was known as negociants, but quickly turned into one of the top red Burgundy producers when they began purchasing parcels of land from the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits.
Today most of their sought-after wines, specifically 75%, come from land that has been classified as either premier or grand cru. Since the 1990s, the estate has made an effort to create nearly natural wines by obtaining their biodynamic and organic certifications as well as only using native yeasts and avoiding chaptalization.
