This is an incredible wine that reminds me of the perfect 2000 Barolo Rocche del Falletto. Flowers, spices, leather and animals. Dried mushrooms too. Then changes to Japanese ginger and lemon peel. Full-bodied but refined and so long. It has layers of fruit and power. Decadent. Ripe and intense. Perfect balance and harmony. It will be released in 2016.
Good medium red. Crushed cherry, raspberry, rose petal and botanical herbs on the tangy nose and palate. If the Santo Stefano is a more masculine, underbrushy style of nebbiolo, this one is a perfume bomb in the mouth, incredibly silky and fine-grained but with outstanding sappy tang to leaven its thickness. Most impressive today on the slowly mounting, elegant, mouth-saturating back end, which features big but fine-grained tannins and outstanding rising length. A real essence of nebbiolo. 96+
“If I said his top Barbarescos and Barolos can rival a great vintage of Petrus for richness and complexity, few, I suspect, would believe it. However, his wines are on that level… if I were restricted to only one bottle of Italian wine, it would be one of the great Barbarescos or Barolos from Bruno Giacosa.”
- Robert Parker
Since 1961, Bruno Giacosa has been producing some of the most sought after wines out of Piedmont. His list of eminent wines is long and strong, and stronger yet is his commitment to quality. Should a vintage be deemed unfit after his scrupulous review, it will be sold as bulk and under no circumstances be sold under the Giacosa label. When a vintage is superb, the “Riserva” is released. Vintages to look out for in particular: 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004.
