Bruno Giacosa was a titan of Italian winemaking who lived, breathed, and dreamed wine. He first started learning techniques from his father and grandfather when he began helping out in the cellar at age 13, and by 15, he was working full time in the family business. He never attended enology school and instead relied on the generational knowledge passed down by his family. As a result, his wines had a strong focus on terroir and traditional vinification. Bruno held his wines to incredibly high standards, and wines that failed to meet his standards often went unbottled. In his 80 year career, Giacosa created wines from both Barolo and Barbaresco that are widely considered to be the finest expressions of Nebbiolo ever produced.
