The myth behind who brought Zinfandel to California starts with a man named "Count" Agoston Haraszthy. Dubbed the father of California wine, he started one of the oldest wineries in California and brought over 300 varieties to California from Europe. Although he was once credited with introducing Zinfandel to California, this has been disproven. Nonetheless, he remains a California wine legend surrounded by myths, including operating the first commercial steamboat on the Mississippi, founding Wisconsin's oldest incorporated town, and serving as San Diego's first town marshal. Of course, the legend of the eccentric Haraszthy ends with the demise of his reported death by the jaws of alligators in the jungles of Nicaragua. Whether or not he brought Zinfandel to California, we are grateful to have it as this grape is much more than just a pink, sticky-sweet concoction. as it flourishes in California in the dry, warm climate, producing a spicy, full-bodied, jammy treat!
Make sure you don't miss the chance to add a bottle of Zinfandel to your collection and enjoy the legend of this magnificent grape.
