In Southern Rhone lies the historic village of Chateauneuf du Pape. With a history as rich as the wines that hail from this small region, Chateauneuf du Pape is considered the first French appellation with the AOC designation. Grenache, the star varietal here, thrives in the terroir scattered with large quartz stones known as “galets” and is responsible for powerful, jammy, red fruit flavors. This is often balanced by blending Syrah or Mouvedre for notes of black fruit, spice, and structure. These are recognized as the key varietals used to make CdP, though now a total of 18 varietals (including white grapes) are permitted in blending. The wines delightfully explore the balance between vibrant, fruit-forward, full-bodied reds with savory nuances and spicy undertones. Luscious and hard to resist young, age will allow the wine to mature elegantly with a silky finish.
