Opus One Winery stands as a trailblazer in the world of fine wine. Founded in 1978 as a groundbreaking partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild, it was the first major collaboration to unite the winemaking traditions of Bordeaux with the innovation of Napa Valley. Located at Oakville, in the heart of the Napa Valley, the estate is known not only for its visionary architecture but also for its pioneering spirit.
The winery’s flagship bottling, Opus One, is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The wine is renowned for its balance of power and elegance - showcasing ripe black fruit, fine-grained tannins, integrated oak, and a long, mineral-driven finish.
Benchmark Wine Group currently offers a wide selection of Opus One vintages—including historic early releases like 1979 and 1985, alongside critically acclaimed recent years such as the 2016, and the 2021 vintage, rated 97–99 points. The 2021 is described as dense and elegant, with layers of cassis, blackberry, graphite, violets, and a remarkable sense of finesse. Add some of these wines to your cellar and enjoy.
