Randy Dunn played a pivotal role in the creation of the Howell Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983—the first officially recognized sub-appellation of Napa Valley. Today, Dunn Vineyards cultivates 42 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain at elevations ranging from 1,800 to 2,000 feet. The volcanic soils, rich in red clay and tufa limestone, impart a deep concentration and bold flavor profile to the wines.
Benchmark Wines recently acquired a notable collection of classic Napa Valley Cabernets, featuring an extensive selection of Dunn wines. The collection includes verticals spanning vintages from 2000 to 2019, along with numerous magnums.
Dunn Vineyards produces two core wines:
Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon – The estate’s flagship wine, crafted exclusively from estate-grown fruit, is celebrated for its intensity, firm tannic structure, and exceptional aging potential. Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – A blend of Howell Mountain fruit with a small portion from the valley floor, offering a more approachable style with softer tannins. Dunn Vineyards sets a standard with traditional winemaking and a profound commitment to the land, consistently producing wines that capture the essence and character of Howell Mountain.
