In 1978 Kistler was founded on the notion that compelling wines of site should be made in California. Specializing exclusively in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the winery sources its grapes from various locations across Sonoma County and southern Napa. Since 2006, the winery has consciously shifted away from the big, rich style of Chardonnay that initially gained them fame. This transition involves harvesting grapes earlier and using less new oak. Vineyard operations and winemaking are directed by Steve Kistler, while Mark Bixler handles lab work and business management. In 2008, Jason Kesner, previously the vineyard manager at Hudson Vineyards in Carneros, joined the team to support Steve with winemaking. Kesner fully took over winemaking duties at the end of 2017 when Steve stepped down to focus on the Occidental label.
