Kosta Browne: From Tip Jar to Trophy Wine
Some stories in wine feel almost mythical — this one happens to be true. Two restaurant friends, Dan Kosta and Michael Browne, pooled their tips from working at a local Sonoma restaurant to buy their first grapes.
From that humble start came one of California’s most celebrated names. Within a decade, in 2011, Kosta Browne’s 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir was crowned Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year — the first Pinot Noir ever to earn that title. What followed was a string of releases that defined a new California style: generous, pure, and balanced with unwavering precision.
This week’s release captures that legacy and evolution — from Russian River and Sonoma Coast icons like Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, and Kanzler, to a new arrival that embodies the same spirit of site-driven finesse: the 2021 DK Grail Pinot Noir, Campbell Ranch. Grown along the rugged Sonoma Coast, this wine balances power and purity — a true reflection of its windswept coastal terroir.
And for collectors who love a twist, don’t miss their limited Burgundy bottlings from Beaune, Volnay, Meursault, and Gevrey-Chambertin — crafted under the same philosophy that began in that restaurant tip jar.
Quantities remain small by design. Every Kosta Browne release is a nod to craft, persistence, and the art of Pinot done right.
