The Gironde River, along with the Dordogne and Garonne, segments Bordeaux's geographic boundaries into what are known as the Right and Left Banks. Despite their close proximity, terroir conditions are quite different. On the left side, the soil consists predominantly of sand, gravel, and pebbles, which provide the ideal drainage and heating required for Cabernet Sauvignon. Around the town of Saint-Émilion is an area of deep limestone covered by layers of loam/clay, sand, and calcareous clay soils which are known as the Cotes - all ideal conditions for Cabernet Franc. In Pomerol, clay is more prominent. Clay absorbs water easily, which keeps the vines cool under the hot summer sun. These are perfect conditions for the Merlot grape, as they help retain its backbone of acidity and not overripen.
Today, we are showcasing the best renditions across decades of vintages from both banks, so find your favorites today!
