The most consistently enlightening experience I gain from my own wine collection comes from exploring the same wine from multiple vintages – known as a vertical. A vertical collection does not have to be made of consecutive vintages. Some collectors like to skip certain vintages that may not represent the best conditions of a given wine-producing region. Others will prefer to accumulate complete sets of vintages, regardless of the reported vintage quality. Either technique delivers a broad picture of the characteristics of the specific producer, winery, vineyard site, grape variety, or cuvee under consideration over time. One of the joys of collecting wine is found in the growing understanding of how each of those variables reacts with differences in vintage conditions and with greater age. Another way to think of verticals is this: They provide wine for drinking Now AND Then.
We have selected from the prodigious inventory at Benchmark Wine Group a list of wines of which we have five vintages or more of each item. The list is far too large for a single offer, so we present for you today our list of Bordeaux verticals. Explore our range of these spectacular wines and select a vertical or two for addition to your cellar today!
