In the northern Rhone region of France lies a very special hill. The way the story goes, a knight returned from the Crusades, battle worn and tired, seeking refuge and respite. He climbed this hill, built a stone chapel, and made it his home earning him the title of “hermit” by the local townsfolk. Ever since, this hill gained the famous name, Hermitage, in his honor and it grows some of the best Syrah in the world. Beyond the mere beauty of the sun exposed hill, it is what is underneath that is equally important. The hill lies on a bedrock of granite, clay, and limestone giving the wines made from the Syrah an intense, vivid, and spiced minerality with supple and powerful notes of black fruits, sweet cherries, and savory herbaceousness.
Arguably the best Syrah based wines in the world, Hermitage is a fabled power that many incredible producers have learned to tame to its fullest expression. Producers like Chapoutier, Jaboulet, and the legendary Jean-Louis Chave. And while the reds certainly take the spotlight, some of the best white wines come from this place as well.
At Benchmark, we offer a superb collection of some of the best producers from this famous hill. Treat yourself and your cellar today.
