Founded by British businessman Peter Newton in 1964, Sterling Vineyards is a popular winery today located in the northern part of Napa Valley near the town of Calistoga. He purchased 50 acres at that time to establish a vineyard and begin his transition into the wine industry, and with rapid expansion he was able to create the first vintage-dated Merlot in California in 1969. From the Coca-Cola Company to Seagram, Sterling changed ownership multiple times before landing in the hands of beverage conglomerate Diageo in 2001. The winery is known today for their variety of collections ranging from their Sterling Vintners Collection label, which includes nine varietals and ships more than one million cases per year, to their Sterling Vineyards Estate Wines which focus on single-vineyard releases.
