Zaca Mesa was established in 1973 by John Cushman and five partners in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. Now owned by the Cushman family, it is one of the region’s pioneering wineries and remains dedicated to producing estate-grown wines from its high-elevation vineyard.
In 1978, founding winemaker Ken Brown planted the first Syrah vines in Santa Barbara County. These historic, own-rooted vines survive in the Black Bear Block and produce one of Zaca Mesa’s most distinctive limited-production wines. The estate now focuses on Rhône varieties including Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Roussanne and Viognier, shaped by the vineyard’s elevation, varied soils and proximity to the Pacific Ocean.
