Benchmark recently acquired several notable collections, which included an impressive selection of Super Tuscan wines. Super Tuscans emerged in the 1970s, when a group of innovative Tuscan winemakers chose to break away from the strict DOC/DOCG regulations. In pursuit of higher quality and greater creative freedom, they began incorporating new varietals — notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah—either blending them with or replacing Sangiovese entirely.
These wines are typically red blends, although some single-varietal examples exist. They are often aged in new French oak barrels, which contributes to their rich, polished, and internationally appealing style. Super Tuscans are known for being bold, structured, and age-worthy. Their bold flavors complement steaks, BBQ, Bolognese, and rich sauces, making them an excellent choice for robust foods.
Benchmark has many notable Super Tuscan wines, including Sassicaia – widely regarded as the first Super Tuscan, Tignanello – one of the most influential in the category, as well as many other top producers such as Ornellaia and Solaia.
