Nothing compares to a classic Rioja when it comes to rustic charm (in my opinion). These wines are incredibly age-worthy; they only get more complex with age. The key (not so secret) ingredient? American Oak! Of course, in addition to terroir, the “old school” style of Rioja requires the use of new American oak. Some winemakers may consider this too strong for many varietals, imparting a distinct flavor of dill, coconut, and cocoa. However, these strong flavors suit the bold Tempranillo. Especially when the intention is to allow these wines to age for many years, even before release! And trust us, the wait is worth it! When given enough time to congeal the balance is spectacular. Wait even longer and the tertiary flavors bound forward with notes of leather, dried strawberries, dried herbs, and even nuts.
